I have to admit that I’m no history buff, but when I hear the Saints name, three things come to mind: a super bowl, a whole lot of losing seasons and giving away the farm for Ricky Williams.
The Cowboys–Saints rivalry may not be the biggest, but there’s history. And when looking into that history I was quite surprised at how close this match-up has been throughout the years.
Here are some interesting notes from the Cowboys vs. Saints past:
- The teams first met in 1967 which ended in a Cowboys 14-10 victory.
- The Cowboys have faced the Saints 27 times and currently hold a series leading advantage of 16-11.
- Talk about one or the other, nine games have been decided by less than seven points, and nine games have been decided by more than 14 points.
- 11 of the last 17 games have been decided by less than ten points.
- The last time the Cowboys traveled to New Orleans, to say it didn’t go too well is an understatement, the Saints put a 49-17 beat-down on the Cowboys and dropped their record to 6-7 all-time when playing at New Orleans.
- This will be the fifth time the two teams have matched up on a Sunday night. Both teams have identical 2-2 records, but a win would give Dallas its league-best, 28th win on Sunday night.
- With a Cowboys victory, head coach Jason Garrett would tie Jimmy Johnson for second-most all-time regular season head coaching wins with 44. Trailing, of course, the great Tom Landry with 250.
- Offensive tackle Charles Brown 2010-13 and defensive back Corey White 2012-14, both began their NFL careers with the Saints.
- Barry Church has 24 tackles in three games against the Saints which includes a career-high 17 in last year’s match-up.
- All-time, Dallas leads the scoring between the two teams 571 to 524 in the 27 match-ups between the two.
Make no doubts about it, the Superdome is a tough place for an opposing team to pull out a victory. But if/when the Cowboys do, they will be sitting at 3-1 atop the NFC east, with the cavalry starting to return on Monday.
