Dallas Cowboys 2016 Draft Order: Week 13 Update

Sean Martin

With last night’s win, the Cowboys are just a game back of first place in the NFC East at 4-8. They also currently hold a top 10 pick in the upcoming NFL Draft.

If the season ended today, the Cowboys would hold the sixth overall pick in the 2016 NFL Draft.

This is two spots down from last week’s theoretical pick. Picking ahead of the Cowboys would be the Browns, Titans, Chargers, Ravens, and Jaguars. As was the case last week, only one team ahead of Dallas seemingly needs a quarterback – the Cleveland Browns.

That is if they don’t like what they see out of Johnny Manziel – who reportedly will start against the 49ers for Cleveland this week.

The Cowboys have selected sixth overall twice in their history, most recently in 2012 when they traded up to the pick to draft Morris Claiborne. They also selected Lee Roy Jordan sixth overall in 1963.

Claiborne is also the last player the Cowboys have selected in the top ten.

Through 13 weeks, the Cowboys seem to be in a “best of both worlds” position – with a fighting chance at the division and high draft pick all still in play. Share your thoughts on the draft, or the Cowboys NFC East chances, with a comment below!

  1. I agree with you 100% . I have a feeling, the Cowboys will shock the world in 2016, by selecting the second quarterback, since Jerry brought the Cowboys , in the 1st round. It would be a dream come true, because I truly believe that the quarterback the Cowboys finally select, will benefit from the offensive line, Dez, the improved defense, to take the Cowboys back to the Promise Land (Super Bowl ). How About Them Cowboys! !

  2. The above statement was in regards to the future, when the selected quarterback, is mentored under Romo, learning the ins and outs of being a NFL quarterback and face of the franchise, in the 3rd year taking the keys towards the Cowboys being elite again. Nothing against Romo, just excited about the future, as a diehard Cowboys fan.

  3. You absolutely can't undervalue being able to groom a QB for a few years, and that is what the Cowboys are looking at if they go QB in the first round. So I agree, it's exciting! However, I'm not 100% on the "Cowboys must take a quarterback in the first round" train yet.

  4. Definitely — grooming a quarterback in Dallas is a big deal.

Like you said Sean and I'm going to elaborate: being the quarterback of the Dallas Cowboys is not something you can just walk into unprepared. You have the biggest magnifying glass on you compared to any other position on any other team in the entire league. It is as much about mental/emotional preparation than it is about physical preparation when you're coming to the Cowboys.

One year of grooming would be nice, but two years would be even better. I can't speak much about the specific quarterbacks that will be available, but I think this year is the time to strike either in the first round or the second round. But if you're looking for an heir apparent, you are statistically going to be better off targeting someone with that first round pick.

  5. Even as a Oregon fan, I think the QB from Stanford Hogan could be a fit in Dallas as a mid-round pick. Will watch more of him when I start prepping for the draft, but strikes me as a guy that addresses that first thing you brought up – and that's being under the microscope. Hard working kid, emotional leader of that team and has a good arm. Just worry about some of the smaller things with him.
