After the injury on Thanksgiving, Tony Romo has now had four career-threatening injuries, three of which were all regarding the same left clavicle. While Romo will be back for the 2016 season and a few years beyond that, the reality is that the Cowboys have to look into finding his successor over the offseason. Here’s an option in the first round of this year’s upcoming draft.
Paxton Lynch is a player that has the makings of a Pro Bowl football player at the next level. Drawing comparisons to Ben Roethlisberger because of his frame and his arm strength, Lynch is a promising football player. However, he’s extremely raw, but if he is given a few years to sit and learn behind a player of Romo’s quality, it should bode well for his progression as an NFL player.
Whether it’s been Matt Cassel or Brandon Weeden, the Cowboys’ offense hasn’t synced when their backup signal-callers have been in. Drafting a guy like Lynch would be a good thing and a bad thing.
Behind Romo, Lynch wouldn’t start right away, but he would give the Cowboys a reason for belief for the future and it will make Cowboys fans more comfortable knowing they have a player that can take over for Romo when the veteran decides to retire.
At 6-foot-7, 240 pounds, Lynch is a bigger quarterback that wins with his arm talent. His numbers have been huge over the course of the past year. Sure these numbers have come against weaker opponents in the AAC, but if this class of quarterbacks continues to not impress, and the Cowboys want to go quarterback in the first round, Lynch is one of the first options that comes to mind.
