Dallas Cowboys: What Is The Future At QB?

No matter how many times I call Jerry Jones, he won’t tell me what he’s planning to do in the draft. In fact, most times our conversations end with, “How did you get this number?” Or “Why do you keep calling me?” And the usual, “If you call me again, I’ll make sure security doesn’t let you into AT&T Stadium” (#FreeDante).

So even though we are close friends, Jerry (we’re on a first name basis) won’t tell me what him, Stephen and Will have planned for the draft in April. Therefore I can only pontificate and speculate who they plan to have #72 snap the ball to down the road.

There are many options at 4, but there is an equal amount of responsibility there too.

When will the Cowboys pick that early again? Hopefully never because we will pick 32nd for the rest of eternity. But with that pick, the 4th overall, it will dictate what the men in the war room think of number 9 and his time table.

Again, I’m speculating, but if the 4th pick births a quarterback, then they think Tony Romo has 2-3 years left and it’s time to draft an heir to the throne to be groomed into the future face of the franchise.

Mr. Romo hasn’t played a season in its entirety since 2012. He doesn’t practice on Wednesdays because he can’t throw, he has broken his ribs, his back twice, and just recently announced surgery on his collarbone – which he also broke, twice. He is also 35 years old.

If he had been a Macintosh, you probably would have replaced the bowl with a new bundle of apples – this time Fuji, since they don’t bruise as easily. And although Jerry Jones believes Romo has 4-5 years to go, Stephen Jones is still very much considering the possibility of a QB first. But it can’t be any QB.

A QB in the first round means a QB that will have his number permanently engraved into the stadium for years to come. As to who that could be, I could only suggest who the people I trust suggest: Christian Hackenberg, Jared Goff, Carson Wentz and Jeff Driskel. And even they shrug after giving me those names.

But… If they get someone else with the 4th overall, be it Jalen Ramsey, Joey Bosa, Myles Jack, Zeke Elliott or Devontae Booker – anyone but a quarterback, they are planning on having Romo for 4-5 years (or are simply willing to overlook weather or not he has 2 – 3 years left).

Mr. Romo is ranked 3rd overall in QB passer rating. Here, just look at this chart:

You know what is most exciting about that chart? Everyone on there has won a Super Bowl, except America’s quarterback – which means he’s due to win one! Huzzah!

If the New York Giants have taught us anything, it’s that a mediocre quarterback can win a Super Bowl, twice, with a little help from his friends. We have a great QB but maybe our QB needs some friends in order to put a heavy Super Bowl ring on his finger.

Don’t tell me this is “Win Now” mode. That’s nonsense. Every team wants to “Win Now,” except the Eagles because they have never won and have found solace amidst their fifty-year-stretch of mediocrity.

The Cowboys are not so much in “Win Now” mode, but they could be in “Tony has given us his ribs, his back, his collarbone, and twelve years worth of memories so we should win for Romo mode.” Or, simply put, “Win for Romo Mode.”

I like that mode. It’s kind of like what the Bronco’s did for Peyton Manning.

Many of their Free Agency moves seemed more “Pro-Peyton” than “Pro-Future-Broncos.” Yes, I understand, that as far as building a team through Free Agency, something a wise front office would stray away from, they are the exception. But there is a combination between what the Bronco’s did and what the Patriots, Steelers and Packers do, which is build a team through the draft to be consistently successful.

It’s a combination of both that will get America’s team, God’s favorite team, in NFC Championship games over and over. Maybe even against the 49ers for old times sake. But it’s what the guys in the war room do now that will decide if Tony rides out into the sunset or becomes Dan Marino part II, or Joe Namath on the Rams. I think they respect Romo too much for that.

When the clock turns 00:00 in February, and the confetti is blue and silver, the first thing I want to yell is “Tony Romo!” I’m not for drafting a QB first round, I’m for getting number 9 in the Ring of Honor as well as a nice ring on his finger (Don’t worry, Candice, I mean a Super Bowl ring so you’re safe… for now).
