The Dallas Cowboys still have work to do. There are no days off for teams when it comes to focusing on the next task at hand, and for the Cowboys now out of the playoffs after a heartbreak at home to the Packers, this task would be the 2017 NFL Draft.
The Cowboys hold the 28th pick in the first round of the 2017 Draft.
Slotted to pick in the back-end of the first, this will be the third time in five seasons that Dallas will select with the 27th overall pick or later. In 2013, the Cowboys owned the 18th overall pick – using it to trade down to 32 with the San Francisco 49ers and draft C Travis Frederick.
Most recently, in 2015, the Cowboys selected DB Byron Jones 28th overall, now their starting stud free safety.
As we sit here just a day removed from the Cowboys’ season-ending loss in the Divisional Round, some of their biggest team needs appear to be at (in no particular order) defensive end, corner back, wide receiver, right tackle, and tight end.
The Dallas Cowboys could sit back and choose from a deep defensive class at 28 to address one of these needs, or look to make a splash and trade up for a high first round talent – sensing that they are just a few stars away from a long run of NFL dominance.
One thing is certain for the Cowboys in the 2017 NFL Draft though, and it is that if they find a way to replicate the talent haul from their 2016 class, the Cowboys will own one of the most complete and youthful rosters in recent America’s Team history.
The long draft process is just getting started, and we now know what asset the Cowboys hold when 32 teams go on the clock on April 27th.
