Whenever the general consensus thinks of the Dallas Cowboys’ brass, the names of Jerry Jones and Stephen Jones are always brought up. ‘Keeping up with the Joneses’ has brought a lot of attention over the past few years, mainly negative, but the Cowboys are a still a team that has the potential to be very good for a long time, and a large reason why is because of the players they’ve brought in through the draft over the past few years. Who should get the acclaim? Jerry? Stephen? No actually. The person who deserves the credit is none other than Will McClay.
Dating back to his days in the Arena Football League, most notably with the Dallas Desperados and the Detroit Drive, McClay has also been one that has had an eye for talent. And for about the past five years now, McClay has been the guy behind all of the decisions. Demarcus Lawrence? McClay’s pick. Travis Frederick? McClay’s pick. Tyron Smith? McClay’s pick. Johnny Manziel? Jerry’s would’ve-been pick. Instead of Manziel, the Cowboys elected Zack Martin and in just two seasons, what has ensued is two All-Pro and Pro Bowl years.
Today is Black Monday in the NFL, the day where many NFL head coaches and general managers receive pink slips and get out those movie-looking brown cardboard boxes to pack their things. Because so many teams are looking to go in different directions, there was a thought McClay would take over a general manager somewhere this offseason. However, the Fort Worth Star Telegram reported that McClay will be staying put.

Known for his talent evaluating skills, the Cowboys will be getting back their main draft guy, and while Stephen looks to be the next in line to take over the Cowboys’ franchise, McClay is going to be at the table to chip in with decision-making, as he should be.
