In the every changing world of the NFL Draft, Draft Cowboys takes a look at a possible four round mock scenario. The Cowboys are coming off of their win over the New York Giants which showed a few weaknesses and also what they do well. Last week’s edition I had the Cowboys taking two offensive guards, a defensive end and a safety.
1. Ra’Shede Hageman, DT, Minnesota
Jason Hatcher came back from injury against the Giants and led this defense which caused Eli and company to have to settle for field goals when they reached the red zone on multiple occasions. He is on the wrong side of 30 and while he might return in 2014, the Cowboys will need to find youth at the position.
Hageman is an absolute freak at the tackle position. He stands in at 6’6” according to the Gophers’ media guide and is 311 pounds. He is quick off of the line and can be an absolute mismatch with his power. Think DeMarcus Ware on the interior, although he is about 2 inches taller. He is versatile to play multiple spots on the defensive line. Imagine what Marinelli could do with this talent.
2. Zack Martin, OG, Notre Dame
There is no question that offensive guard is a big question mark for this offensive line. The loss of veteran Brian Waters was a huge killer for this unit. Callahan had this unit playing with some consistency that this team hasn’t had. The edition of Waters assisted the play of Doug Free. Yes the same man that many wanted to run out of town. Also the great start by Ronald Leary was short lived. He has had his fair share of issues.
Martin played tackle for the Fighting Irish, but lacks the elite length and strength to play there at the NFL level. He has the versatility to play inside. He has the tenacity that you like in a guard. Couple him with Travis Frederick and Dallas could have a great tandem inside.
3. Kony Ealy, DE, Missouri
Anthony Spencer may have well played his last game with the star on the side of his helmet. Big things were expected of him and Ware before his season was cut short by micro fracture surgery. Dallas has mixed in a hodgepodge of players to try and fill his spot on the defensive line. It is very unlikely he returns.
Ealy is a big end who jumps out at you on film. His length at 6’7” makes it near impossible to throw over and can use it to his advantage. Other than his size, he reads the play quickly and reacts. In a Tampa 2 defense the defensive end has to react quickly. His closing burst will something that helps him with sack totals.
4. Aaron Murray, QB, Georgia
Tony Romo isn’t going anywhere, but the Cowboys are in the need for a quarterback to start the learning process. Kyle Orton is an adequate backup; however there is the concern of his contract. By release Orton the Cowboys can save $3 million against the cap. A rookie backup can save them money wise.
Aaron Murray could fall to the Cowboys in the fourth round due to his injury. Before he went down with a torn ACL, Murray was on the way to being a third round or earlier selection. Murray was the model of consistency at the collegiate level. All four years he threw for 3,000 yards or more with no less than 24 touchdowns. He has a career 3/1 TD/INT ratio. He could sit and learn under Romo and it would be a more viable option should Romo go down.
