Ezekiel Elliott Speaks To Media, Scores All “RKG” Points

Sean Martin

The Cowboys modern triplets took the field for the first time together for OTAs, teasing Cowboys Nation of what lies ahead with a fully healthy Tony Romo, recovering Dez Bryant, and rookie Ezekiel Elliott.

While it wasn’t a whole lot that they did on the field yesterday, the three players addressed the media in the locker room after practice.

All eyes were on the young Elliott, who absolutely made his Head Coach in Jason Garrett proud with some of these quotes that exemplified his personality as one of Jason’s “right kind of guys” as well as a player deserving of the fourth overall pick.

Let’s look at some of the quotes that stuck with me after the interview –

“It’s definitely better to have competition in there. Competition makes you better.”

When asked about Darren McFadden, who was getting the first crack at running back, Elliott touched on one of Garrett’s fundamental principals when it comes to his leadership of the Dallas Cowboys.

Looking ahead to training camp, the Cowboys are going to have intense competition seemingly all over the football field. Each positional unit will have guys fighting for bigger roles, whether it’s as a starter or as an active player on game day.

Whatever the case may be, this competition will only better prepare the Cowboys for 2016. Elliott appears to be embracing the competition that exists in the backfield between him and Darren McFadden, Alfred Morris, and Darius Jackson.

While the vast expectation is that Elliott will start the season as Dallas’ premier backfield weapon, it would be foolish to count McFadden out just yet, as a veteran who resurrected his career in 2015 with the team.

In fact, Elliott had nothing but more praise for McFadden when asked about teammates who’s work ethic has impressed him:

“In my own room, Darren McFadden, just the way he works out there. It showed me what I need to do and how I need to be ready.”

Even if DMC isn’t able to earn a lot of snaps for the Cowboys going forward, the team may keep him around simply for the veteran presence and experience he can bring to the running back room that Elliott hopes to dominate for years to come.

It will certainly be interesting to see how Scott Linehan and the offense handles both backs if they are practicing well through the summer, while also factoring Alfred Morris and Darius Jackson into the mix.

“With no pads on you could see the line open up holes. Seeing how they were able to get you to the second level without pads, it’s going to be crazy to see what they can do once they get the pads on.”

Of course, no interview with Ezekiel Elliott will be complete this time of year without mention of the star-studded offensive line that will play in front of him. Even before the draft, Zeke was vocal about wanting to play for the Cowboys because of this very line.

It’s certainly good to see that the young but ultra-talented unit was able to impress Zeke right away, opening up holes that we eagerly await to watch Elliott run through.

I think we all agree with Ezekiel here, hurry up padded football!

For now, it’s great to see anything resembling Dallas Cowboys football on the field, and even better to see how perfect of a player the Cowboys may have landed in Ezekiel Elliott.

  1. It's refreshing, right? After all the Greg Hardy talk last year we can finally get back to talking about guys pushing the right buttons in the media.

    • Absolutely, he's the perfect guy to be getting attention out of the first round picks right now, because he can handle it and he's also walking into a situation where we all know the odds are incredibly in his favor to have a terrific rookie year. Should all be very fun to watch unfold…
