Ian Rapoport reported that Al Golden is in line to join the Dallas Cowboys staff as an assistant.

The former head coach at the University of Miami was fired earlier this year.
Golden was a tight end at Penn State, with a brief career in the NFL with the New England Patriots.
As a coach, Golden got his big break when he took over as the defensive coordinator at the University of Virginia. Under Golden, the Virginia defense went from 74th overall in scoring defense, to 17th.
In 2001, Virginia finished 2nd in the ACC and 11th nationally with 18 interceptions as well as 2nd in the ACC and 18th nationally with 28 takeaways. In 2002, Virginia ranked 14th nationally with a +15 turnover margin, registering 35 takeaways in the season, leading the ACC.
An Al Golden hiring will probably come with some jokes by Miami fans, opposing teams and some within the Cowboys fan base. Golden was not very successful at the University of Miami as their head coach.
However, adding someone with head coaching experience, especially at a major program, is a plus for any team. Golden is not coming to the Dallas Cowboys as a head coach. He is coming in as an assistant, and one that has the credentials that can definitely help out.
Golden gets it done when it comes to defense. It is unknown in what capacity he will come in, but there is an opening at defensive backs coach.
There is a connection between the Garrett family and Golden. John Garrett coached with Golden at Virginia in 2004, and both Golden and Garrett are from nearby areas in New Jersey.
