With so much talk around the league about which free agents are headed where, my twitter timeline has been filled with contracts and rumors. It is time for Cowboys Nation to tap the breaks on who Dallas can sign. By not signing anyone the Cowboys could actually be helped out by other teams in the league. The NFL Draft is where Jerry should make his mark on the team this year.
Most of the NFL teams that are picking in the top ten have made moves that won’t impact the Cowboys with the exception of the Tennessee Titans and Buffalo Bills. The top guard free agent Andy Levitre formerly of the Bills is now a Titan. Most draft analysts, myself included, thought Chance Warmack was headed there. This is a player that would fit the Cowboys very well, as he is known for knocking defenders back.
While that does open up the possibility of Warmack to the Bills, they also have a need at the quarterback position with the release of Ryan Fitzpatrick. Could Geno Smith be headed to Buffalo? If he can make it past Arizona, Geno as their quarterback is a realistic scenario.
As it sits right now the Cowboys should and quite possibly have Warmack, Lane Johnson, Jonathan Cooper and a number of defensive players on their list. While the Chargers have been linked to Lane Johnson and Eric Fisher, the team that helps Dallas the most might be the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Most recently Tampa Bay drafted Mark Barron last season, and signed Dashon Goldson from the 49ers.
With Goldson/Barron tandem as the starters for Tampa Bay, Kenny Vaccaro is more likely to be available for Dallas. If I am making the call in the war room, Vaccaro is number one on my list. He is a cover safety who can come up to stop the run as well. Trading spots with Gerald Sensabaugh is quite an ideal situation, with Vacarro having youth and a better skill set on his side.
If that wasn’t enough of an encouragement to steer clear of throwing money at free agents, Dallas must look to the future with impending big deals. Sean Lee, Bruce Carter and Dez Bryant all have contracts that will expire in the next few seasons. Without locking up money on players who may or may not perform for this team, they have a legit chance to keep their young core of talent in Dallas.
