Is Byron Jones In Line To Be A Captain For The Cowboys?

There are still a lot of particulars to work out before the 2017 Dallas Cowboys season officially begins. There’s the whole waiting for football season to start thing, but one of the things that’ll help remind us that it hasn’t is who will be the captains for America’s Team this year. 2016’s Captains saw a new face wear the iconic “C” on his chest, and maybe if things work out a certain way Byron Jones will be 2017’s new face.

It won’t be shocking to see Dak Prescott – Jason Garrett’s perfect quarterback – get the captain call in 2017. I know you’re a smart cookie, so I won’t waste your time with that. The new face that could be out calling the coin toss for Dallas could indeed be 2015 1st Rounder and all-athlete Safety Byron Jones.

Part of what the Dallas Cowboys – namely Jason Garrett – loved about Byron Jones when they took him in the first round of the 2015 NFL Draft was who he was… off of the field. Byron Jones is a “right kind of guy” if there ever was one. Nicknamed “The Senator” thanks to his experience in the world of politics, Byron Jones checks all of the boxes in terms of what you want from your leaders.

The Secondary Is Hungry For Leadership

Byron Jones is one of the Cowboys’ starting safeties – the other will be determined at a later date – and he’s suddenly one of the more tenured guys in the secondary as a whole. Barry Church, JJ Wilcox, Brandon Carr, and Morris Claiborne all left in Free Agency. While the Cowboys did inject a nice crop of young talent in the Draft, there’s a lot of unfamiliarity there.

If you think about it, there really isn’t a strong leader on the defense – from an outsider’s perspective at least – outside of Sean Lee. We all know the lack of “war daddy” along the Defensive Line, maybe Taco Charlton will change that, and the secondary is significantly different as we mentioned.

Byron Jones Would Make A Fantastic Captain

Byron Jones finally hauled in his first career interception in 2016 against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

There’s no denying how great of a captain Byron Jones would be for the Dallas Cowboys. He’s entering his third season in the blue and silver, and he’s experienced the highest of highs and the lowest of lows.

Jason Garrett wants guys who he can trust to wear the “C” on their chest. He wants extensions of himself out there. He wants players who don’t get frazzled when things get hectic. If that’s the recipe for a team captain then someone needs to start sewing the “C” on Byron’s jersey already.

  1. Byron will make the perfect captain He came in from day one and demanded respect from the get go. He plays all positions and has never been afraid of contact

  2. I could see it happening. I could also see Orlando Scandrick being the other defensive captain (along with Sean Lee).
