With Dak Prescott firmly cemented as the Dallas Cowboys starting quarterback, all eyes shifted to the backup QB situation. There has been some uncertainty as who the backup QB will be in 2017 and exactly how many QBs will be on the 53-man roster. Fortunately, owner/general manager Jerry Jones recently cleared things up.
On @1053thefan, owner Jerry Jones says it's "very likely" #Cowboys keep all three QBs (Prescott, Rush and Moore) on 53-man roster.

If we are to believe Jerry Jones, then the Dallas Cowboys will carry three quarterbacks on their 53-man roster in 2017. Of course, anything Jerry Jones says can usually be taken with a grain of salt. You can just never really be completely positive he is being truthful or not.
If Jerry Jones is true to his word, it means that Dak Prescott, Kellen Moore, and Cooper Rush will all be on the roster in 2017. But, there is really no way of telling if the coaching staff is on board with this or how much say they actually have in who stays and who goes.
I don’t know where you stand, but I don’t agree with this move. If you happened to read my final Dallas Cowboys 53-man roster prediction, then you know that I only went with 2 QBs. I just thought that the extra roster spot allocated to the third QB would be better served elsewhere.
The good news is the Dallas Cowboys can have their cake and eat it too. There is a way they can keep all three QBs without having to give up a roster spot.
You see, Kellen Moore is somehow still eligible to be placed on the practice squad. It is very unlikely any team will claim him off of waivers if the Cowboys cut him. That means they could still protect Cooper Rush and still have Moore available if Dak Prescott were to go down with a serious injury (heaven forbid).
So, you can see that nothing is really set in stone just yet, but you can believe Jerry Jones if you want. I for one think it would be a mistake to give Kellen Moore a roster spot when they still can still have him in the mix on the practice squad. But, unfortunately I’m not making the decisions.
Only one problem. K Moore may not accept a practice squad assignment. He also may not even accept at least in the longer run a 3rd team assignment on the 53 man roster. He is in his sixth year in the NFL and will not have progressed if he ends up on the practice squad or as 3rd team QB on the 53 man roster. Everyone says his future is as a coach so he may decide it is time to get on with this aspect of his career. He will need to accept that his ceiling may be 2nd team QB or even 3rd team, he is not likely to get a lot more chances because of his physical limitations, he could have a very successful coaching career and eventually make big money, etc.. I think if he is given a position on the 53 man roster even at 3rd team QB he will take it because of the money involved. Also being on the team and working with the QBs and coaches must be good experience for being a future coach. He might want to get at least a verbal commitment to compete for the 2nd team QB position in the future. Practice squad is of less value for being a future coach. The 2nd team QB position is critical for K Moore at this stage in his career, as this is his only avenue to get a chance to play and develop some creditability. He is fighting an uphill battle because of his physical limitations mainly not having a real strong arm.
What you say is true, but I don’t see Kellen Moore hanging up his cleats anytime this season. I think he is committed through 2017 at least, even if it is on the practice squad. It’s a horrible time to get a coaching job anywhere and would be better served waiting until the season is over.
I will also guess that Moore is still trying to play football. Although yes, he can get on the coaching ladder when he wants to IMO.
The best thing is to gamble (it’s quarter slots), that you’d lose Moore to waivers. If someone wants him, more power to him. If not his football choices are down to 1 for 2017.
Both Dak’s and Kurt Warner’s rise in the league, tell you that you never know what is up ahead. If Dak were to go down, Moore is back on the team. If Rush comes down to earth and struggles, Moore is your starter. At least temporarily if not longer.
I think he takes that deal. And I want 6 WR’s, so the 2 QB takes the pressure off that.
