The Dallas Cowboys are no stranger to headlines and national coverage. A large reason for that is because of Jerry Jones. Being the general manager and owner, Jones is always in the spotlight, unfortunately for not all of the right reasons. His latest comments on 105.3 The Fan show that Jones believes that Tony Romo could be the starter in Dallas for the next five to six years.
When asked how much longer does Romo have left, Jones responded with this:
“But you’re asking me what I think, and I think we’ve got outstanding quarterbacking ahead of us for the next four or five years. That’s not a downer. Will we be looking to develop and get talent behind Romo? Absolutely.”
These comments show that maybe the Cowboys won’t go the direction of a quarterback in the first round of this year’s draft. The belief is that Romo will be good to go when next year rolls around. If Romo can stay from rolling that left shoulder, the Cowboys will be just fine in the quarterback department, but as he gets older and older, hits become tougher on your body and these hits start to pile up and take a huge toll on a body.
With a top 5 pick, passing up on a potential All-Pro quarterback like Paxton Lynch is extremely difficult, but given the faith Jones has in Romo, it shouldn’t come as a surprise if Dallas drafts a guy who can immediately help their roster like a Robert Nkemdiche or a Jalen Ramsey.
It should also be mentioned that because Jones added in that they would like to improve the talent behind Romo, this also indicates that drafting a quarterback is on the team’s to-do list. In the middle rounds, a guy like Nate Sudfeld or a Carson Wentz might make more sense. That way the first-round pick will be designated for a prospect that can make a more immediate impact.
