Most recently I was giving the opportunity to take part in an interactive mock draft on MockOne.net. I was given the role of Cowboys GM and with the help of three assistant GM’s, we were given free reign to draft the 2013 rookies as we saw fit. You are given a time frame as indicated on the website to make your pick or make any trades as you would in the actual draft. We got together prior to the draft to determine our draft board and strategy. Brandon Nall is the creator of the site and he allows people to do this for free. The following is our six picks and the descriptions of why they were chosen.
1. Sharrif Floyd, Defensive Tackle, Florida
With moving to a 4-3 and the legal issues surrounding Josh Brent this makes sense. All other players on our 1st round board were selected, so Floyd is our guy.
2. Terron Armstead, Offensive Tackle, Arkansas-Pine Bluff
Terron Armstead is a versatile player, who we feel can take that right tackle position or one of the guard positions. Allowing Murray and Romo to have more time making a play. Everyone in the warroom agreed on Armstead.
3. Jonathan Franklin, Running Back, UCLA
Surprised Franklin still available. Gives us depth at the running back position with the departure of Felix Jones. This is also an upgrade. Franklin can do it all. Should provide the Cowboys with a 1-2 punch in the backfield.
4. Justin Pugh, Offensive Guard, Syracuse
Pugh fits a need with protection of Tony Romo. Along with Armstead and Smith we are building our offensive line of the future. There were a list of offensive linemen we were looking at for the 3rd round, with Pugh being the best of them.
5. Keith Pough, Linebacker, Howard
With a top need at outside linebacker, we felt that Pough can play immediately. This is a player that has been on our radar over the last 2 rounds. With no pick in the 4th, happy to get the chance to draft him.
6. Josh Evans, Safety, Florida
Evans was the best available at the safety position. The Cowboys are in need of a safety to play along side Barry Church. Need a safety to play close to the box and stuff the run.
We traded our fourth round pick for another third round pick when Seattle GM wanted to move up in the second round.
