Morris Claiborne Doing The “Right” Things At Training Camp

RJ Ochoa

You know the ‘ol saying, “Two wrongs don’t make a right.”?

WELL THREE RIGHTS MAKE A LEFT SO HOW DO YOU LIKE THEM APPLES?

This is a joke that I look to make as many times as I can in normal day and somehow managed to go over a year without doing here at Inside The Star. You’re welcome.

The word “right” is really important today. I’m going to “write” it a lot. I’m on fire today, aren’t I? What am I even talking about?

Morris Claiborne, the 6th Overall Pick in the 2012 NFL Draft and general disappointment since, wisely did not have his 5th-Year Option picked up by the Dallas Cowboys a year ago. The Cowboys gambled a little bit on Claiborne and were able to re-sign to him a regular contract, of the one-year type.

The cornerback on the collective minds of Cowboys Nation these days is 2015 absentee, Orlando Scandrick. Drafted in 2008, Scandrick brings plenty of experience to the Cowboys secondary as their best cover corner entering 2016. As is typical for most NFL teams this means that he plays the Left Cornerback spot.

Now it’s time to pretend that this is the Cha Cha Slide and slide to the right.

The Right Cornerback spot has been occupied by Brandon Carr chasing down receivers from behind for what seems like forever, but according to the legendary Bryan Broaddus and his keen eye… things might be a’changin’ for the 2016 iteration of America’s Team.

Morris Claiborne has all the talent in the world. We know that.

It seems that talent, which has rarely floated to the surface in Mo’s career, is starting to be noticed by the coaches. Morris is, at the very worst, a carbon copy of Brandon Carr’s talent. Playing him at RCB gives the Cowboys more flexibility and athleticism on the outside.

Cowboys Headlines - Morris Claiborne Doing The "Right" Things At Training Camp
Morris Claiborne is pushing Brandon Carr out of the way and taking over the RCB spot.

I’m not trying to diss Brandon Carr here, he’s just not very good collateral damage of Mo moving to RCB. Carr still provides significant value to the Cowboys should his role be permanently different for the 2016 season. He’s a starting-caliber corner that has never missed a game in his career.

Since most quarterbacks are right-handed, LCBs have to deal with a variety of formations and occasionally slot receivers. Because a wide amount of talent is necessary, that spot is non-negotiable and belongs to Scandrick.

Brandon Carr played RCB during his time in Kansas City that led to Dallas offering him a big-time Free Agent deal in 2012. All throughout OTAs Carr was at RCB with Mo at LCB. It should have been an indication then that the Coaching Staff thought more highly of Claiborne’s skillset, and they’re proving that by bumping Mo to RCB with a healthy Scandrick at LCB.

Carr will still get to contribute to the team, but this might be a way to ensure that the most talented players are on the field. So go ahead and slide over to the right, Mo. Cha cha real smooth.
