New York Jets Claim WR Lucky Whitehead

Sean Martin

There is closure on the Lucky Whitehead saga that should have never reached this point from the beginning of the Dallas Cowboys’ 2017 training camp. The third-year WR has been claimed by the New York Jets.

Lucky Whitehead was cut by the Cowboys on their first day of practice Monday, only to be cleared of an arrest warrant put out for shoplifting in Virginia later on. This naturally led to a media frenzy in Oxnard, as the Cowboys’ perceived message of moving on from a troubled player backfired to come across with the entirely wrong message.

Head Coach Jason Garrett and soon-to-be Pro Football Hall of Fame member Jerry Jones rushed to defend the decision and turn the story in their favor, citing a relatively long list of incidents that Whitehead has been involved in – making him hardly worth any of the trouble as a limited offensive player and below average return man.

The Jets can now employ Whitehead’s services as a player that was very likely to end up a free agent sooner rather than later, a rebuilding team starved for any play making ability at WR.

For the Dallas Cowboys, jet sweep packages, return duties, and even more opportunities are being handed to rookie fourth round pick Ryan Switzer – who any Cowboys Nation member will tell you was the replacement for Whitehead all along.
