NFC East Impact Rookies: Ereck Flowers, New York Giants

Sean Martin

The Giants have not beaten the Cowboys since week 8 of 2012, and their 2015 draft class reflected that across the board.

Coming off of a 6-10 season, many are picking the Giants as a bounce back team to potentially contend for an NFC Wild Card berth.

To do so, their top priority has to be keeping Eli Manning upright in his contract year. The Giants offensive line allowed 30 sacks last season, the ninth-highest total in the league.

With a healthy Victor Cruz expected back and Odell Beckham Jr. set to take the league by storm, the missing piece for the Giants offense is clearly along the line.

The Giants will need an improved offensive line specifically against the Cowboys when they see the revamped defensive line that includes rookie Randy Gregory.

With the ninth overall pick, the Giants added Miami tackle Ereck Flowers to do just that.

The upside for Flowers is high, and he will be given his chance to start right away. His best trait is his run blocking while his pass blocking technique is not fully developed.

He exceeded with his physicality in college, and the question will be whether or not he can carry that into the NFL. See what Bleacher Report had to say about the pick, and where we could see Flowers along the line, here.

The 6’6″, 330-pound linemen can help the Giants get back to their “ground and pound” running style, with running backs Rashad Jennings and Andre Williams.

Taking him in the top ten was certainly a high-risk need based pick for the Giants, and Flower’s will have a huge impact on the Giants season – as early as week 1 at AT&T Stadium.

I will continue to analyze the Giants’ draft class along with the impact these rookies will have on the NFC East, before moving on to the Eagles and Redskins.
