It has been a dizzying offseason for the Philadelphia Eagles, with Chip Kelly leading the way in the Eagles rebuild and eventual resurgence – or collapse. One of the most notable departures from the team was veteran receiver Jeremy Maclin, who reunited with former Eagles’ coach Andy Reid in Kansas City.
However, the Eagles may have found Maclin’s replacement – in a number of ways – by drafting USC WR Nelson Agholor with the 20th overall pick in this year’s draft.
While Agholor was not slated as a first rounder in many mock drafts, the scheme fit in Philly could be a match made in heaven for Sam Bradford and the new Eagles’ offense.
Agholor is the definition of a well-balanced receiver, with very crisp route-running abilities. He can get up field quickly, running a 4.42-second 40-yard dash at the combine. His frame also will also allow him to fight for any jump balls from the wideout or slot position.
If that description does not fit Jeremy Maclin, here is even more proof that the Eagles may have virtually found his clone –
Agholor made an impressive debut in the Eagles’ preseason opening win against the Colts, taking the first pass he caught from Mark Sanchez for a 39-yard touchdown.
While it is just one game, many people are excited about the potential for this Eagles’ offense. Chip Kelly is an offensive mastermind and knows how to utilize the players he has – which is why he slowly has built this offense to his liking.
Their focus will, of course, be the running game led by DeMarco Murray and Ryan Matthews. This will allow any receiver or tight end to get his share of wide-open looks in this offense, and Agholor has shown potential to take any of those to the house.
Uncertainty still runs wild for the Eagles entering 2015, but we could see a heavy dose of Nelson Agholor all over the field in Philly. The revamped Cowboys’ secondary will have to be ready for week 2.
