The path to the Super Bowl, starts first by running the NFC East. To do that, the Cowboys will have to best the New York Giants, the Washington Redskins and the Philadelphia Eagles.
Today, we look at the Philadelphia Eagles’ draft picks that could be the biggest problem for the Cowboys. Believe me this wasn’t easy, because even when I put my bias aside, I’m not sure that the Eagles hit home runs on any of their draft picks. But, I have to be fair, so we’ll look at Carson Wentz, Isaac Seumalo and Alex McCalister.
Carson Wentz is a big, strong and athletic QB with a good arm, but like any rookie, it’s hard to tell if his play will translate into the NFL. One of his biggest problems is that he gets caught locking in on a target. Experienced players like Sean Lee or Orlando Scandrick will see that from a mile away.
He also tends to float the ball when throwing down field. That could lead to an interception if Byron “Jump” Jones is nearby.
Wentz is still in a developmental phase and could turn out to win the starting job in 2016. But if he falls short of being the long-term answer, the Eagles will be in lots of trouble for the next decade. They sold the farm to the Browns for the second overall pick to acquire Wentz.
Isaac Seumalo was one of the best guards against the pass protection in the 2016 Draft. He’s a triple threat who can play tackle, center and guard, as he did in college .
A great offensive linemen could be a bit of a nightmare for this Cowboys’ front, seeing as the defensive line is their achilles heel. Fortunately for the Cowboys, they picked up Cedric Thornton, former Eagles defensive tackle, to compete with him.
The Cowboys also have a lot of young promising talent too in David Irving and Benson Mayowa, depending on where Seumalo plays.
The best acquisition by the Eagles was the hiring of Jim Schwartz as a defensive coordinator. The guy has a head for defense. In addition to finishing fourth in yards allowed last year with the Buffalo Bills, their defense led the NFL with 52 sacks.
That’s what makes Alex McCalister, their 7th round pick, someone to keep an eye on. The 6’6” 239 pound DE is a good athlete who could get even better under Schwartz.
That being said, he doesn’t possess NFL ready instincts and is still a major project. With few premium draft picks, the Eagles weren’t able to take advantage of the array of defensive linemen available so they settled for McCalister.
And, lucky for us, the Dallas Cowboys have the best offensive line in football.
The Eagles spent a lot to acquire their QB, and found help for their offensive line and defense, but it’s nothing the Cowboys can’t handle.
