Derek Carr, QB, Fresno State
The Cowboys have their franchise guy firmly set in place at the current time with Tony Romo who is locked up for at least the next four seasons. The biggest knock on Derek is that he is just like his brother David, which couldn’t be further from the truth. Much like David, Derek has all of the tools to be a great quarterback in the NFL with one key difference: his worth ethic.
Derek is one of those quarterbacks that is a film junkie. Even at the senior bowl he was spending time watching film to gain an edge on the field. This is the type of guy that the Cowboys need backing up Tony Romo. Also on the subject of Romo, taking Derek Carr in the first round makes sense. While many may feel that taking him in the first round would be a waste I would remind you that the Packers did the same thing and it worked out for them.
Could Carr fall to them at 16? As we have seen every season, there is usually at least one player who falls on draft day. When teams start to pass on a certain player then it casts doubt across the league. If Carr is to fall into this situation, it would be a perfect scenario for a contingency plan for the ticking time bomb in Romo’s back.
