One of the most intriguing questions which surrounds the Dallas Cowboys this offseason is where their high profile quarterback, Tony Romo, will be playing in 2017. While rumors that Romo could be headed to Arizona heated up this week, a much colder destination has reportedly thrown its hat in the ring.
According to CBS Sports’ Jason La Canfora, the Buffalo Bills have “significant interest” in trading for Romo this offseason. The deal would reportedly have to include a second round pick this year, as well as another valuable draft pick down the road.
Buffalo extended quarterback Tyrod Taylor last August, but after firing Rex Ryan and bringing in a new staff, Taylor seems to be out the door. Personally, I think Tyrod Taylor is a good quarterback who, in the right situation, can excel. Similar to Romo, he can make something out of nothing, and compensates for an average offensive line.
I have my doubts about this entire deal, however. Romo and owner Jerry Jones have a well-documented relationship, and Jones wants so badly to do right by Romo. We all know that Tony wants to play for a contender next year, and have a chance to win that elusive Lombardi Trophy as soon as 2017.
Frankly, Buffalo is not the place do this. Some of the other situations which have been linked to Romo, such as Houston, Arizona, and Denver all make more sense for both Tony and the Cowboys.
But, if the Bills truly have significant interest, and offer as high as a second round pick for the quarterback, I don’t see any logical reason for the Cowboys to decline the deal. The last time Romo played in Buffalo, he led one of the most improbable comebacks in Cowboys history back in 2007, by the way.
Dallas needs to make a serious attempt at trading Romo before out-right releasing him. It’s no secret there will be several teams vying for his services. I was ticked that Dallas released Demarcus Ware, when other teams wanted him, and Dallas got NOTHING for him. These moves make no sense. IF Dallas didn’t luck up and discover Prescott as a star in his rookie year, Dallas would be paying Romo in 2017. They CAN afford it.
I agree, Henry. I would really like to see him traded than just outright released. The problem will be getting enough back for what we consider Tony’d value to be. Thanks for reading.
The Bills would be idiotic to pony up a #2. It is a complete dice roll as to how durable Romo is. He could be out again quickly. I think any trade will involve a conditional pick only, and then only become a #2 or #3 if he starts all or most games in 2017, etc.
If Romo retires I think that would cancel the trade. If so, he has leverage on where he is traded if anybody offers for him. He tells Jones he’s retiring if he doesn’t like the trade.
