Four years ago I was hanging out at my best friend’s lake house for the weekend. During one of the breaks we took from our backyard football game I checked my phone and saw that the Dallas Cowboys had just made a big move in free agency.
I grabbed my cousin and celebrated… Brandon Carr was ours; however, a lot can change in four years.

This isn’t exactly breaking news if you’ve watched the Dallas Cowboys play defense over the last four years. Carr got off to a decent start in Dallas with three interceptions in 2012, and he repeated that number in 2013. Since then Brandon has had as many interceptions as you and I, and according to Ian Rapoport the Dallas Cowboys have finally had enough.
Just two weeks ago we were applauding Carr’s donation to his hometown of Flint, MI, but this is business time in the NFL and Brandon is an unfortunate casualty of that.
Carr’s salary cap hit in 2016 is $13.817 million dollars, which is an awful lot considering the non-production the team is getting from him. He has never lived up to the five-year, $50 million contract that he signed four years ago so now it’s time for the Cowboys to just cut their losses.
All offseason long it felt like the Cowboys were going to have to make a decision on one of their veteran corners: Brandon Carr or Morris Claiborne. Mo was also acquired in 2012 and has been just as, if not more, disappointing than Brandon. Claiborne however is younger and does have a higher pedigree so if you were going to keep one it makes the most sense for it to be him.
The Cowboys will also get Orlando Scandrick back at the corner spot in 2016 after Orlando missed all of 2015 with a torn ACL at Training Camp. Assuming they are in fact able to re-sign Claiborne they’ll still likely look to add some depth at the position in free agency or the draft.
