March 11 marks the beginning of the new league year and the Cowboys are busy trying to figure out how they are going to get underneath the $133 million cap number by then.
One notable move was announced today as Brandon George of Dallas Morning News cited sources confirming that offensive lineman Phil Costa would be released.
Costa started for the Cowboys in 2011 and seemed primed to anchor the offensive line for the foreseeable future until injuries ruined his 2012 campaign and he was consequently replaced by first round pick Travis Frederick.
Costa provided depth at both the guard and center positions. However, his production didn’t meet the two-year, $2.7 million contract he signed this time last year. In a fiscally challenging environment the Cowboys will have to make moves to limit contracts that don’t match player worth and Costa, unfortunately, was a victim of that.
Costa will count $225,000 against the cap in dead money; his release will save the Cowboys $1.5 million.
The Cowboys also announced that they will be releasing Covey Irvin, Ray Dominguez and Jeff Olson.
It seems to reason that the Cowboys will be busy over the next few days with cuts and restructures as they try and gain some flexibility for the free agent market.
