Tony Romo joined Cowboy greats Troy Aikman and Roger Staubach on Sunday to be the only quarterbacks in Dallas history to start 100 games in the NFL. But even more impressive, Romo has the most passing yards through 100 starts in the history of the league.
Granted I know statistics aren’t everything, but realistically this speaks volumes for Tony’s play over the years. He has been one of the more consistent quarterbacks in the league for a number of years now.
To put this record in context, Romo has thrown for 27,485 yards in his career with the Cowboys. He has also tallied up 189 touchdown passes. Looking back on some of Romo’s best performances the more impressive his career seems. Think back to some of his memorable outings like the game on Thanksgiving Day in 2006 when he threw for 306 yards and five touchdowns in just his fifth start in the league. Even more recently he amazed us all when the Cowboys played the Broncos, his numbers were similar to that Thanksgiving game, but even better. Tony Romo just has that “it” factor and it has led to him racking up the most yards in 100 career starts. So as much flack as Romo catches, I believe it’s fair to say that he will go down in history as one of the best quarterbacks to play the game.
As many people know, Romo didn’t come into the league like most of the other quarterbacks that are on this list with him. He was undrafted and worked relentlessly to get where he is today.
The thing that I think has pushed Tony Romo into an elite group of quarterbacks, is his undauntedly ability to fight through mistakes and ultimately take games over by himself and bring the Cowboys to victory. He also has always had a knack for making average receivers look like super stars.
The press has covered this impressive statistic to an extent, but I think Dallas fans will truly come to realize just how great Tony Romo has been over the years when his run comes to an end.
Every Sunday when the Cowboys faithful sit down to watch their team in action there is one thing is normally a given. Romo will make a play at some point on the game that just makes your jaw drop. He will only continue to prove why Jerry Jones invested $108 million dollars in him this past off-season.
So to all the Cowboy fans that are still skeptical about #9, all I can say to you is just enjoy having a quality quarterback while he is here. Because it is obvious that he is one of the best at what he does right now.
As impressive as those numbers are, I’m sure he would trade those numbers in for rings.
