The Dallas Cowboys have been successful so far about filling holes in their roster through free agency using the smart approach of letting the market settle down and finding some team friendly bargains in the process.
This strategy has allowed them to approach the draft without any glaring needs, which should allow them to select the best player available, regardless of position.
One area of concern for the Cowboys that they haven’t been able to address thus far through free agency is the backup quarterback position, although they tried.
They showed interest in veteran quarterback Matt Moore, and even went as far as bringing him in for a visit. Moore ultimately decided to return to the Miami Dolphins, leaving the Cowboys with one less option to add competition to the position.
As things stand now, it looks as if another Moore will be backing up Tony Romo in 2016, Kellen Moore, who performed admirably when given the chance last season.
Although the coaching staff may feel somewhat comfortable with Kellen Moore as their #2 QB, I still believe that they will turn over every rock to ensure that they have the right person to fill the void if Romo goes down with an injury once again.
There is, however, one free agent quarterback still available that Jerry Jones has been infatuated with over the past several years, and I believe that at some point in the near future this player could be wearing a star on his helmet.
Jerry Jones has had a man-crush on Johnny Manziel since he declared for the draft back in 2014, and the inevitable union between the two could be just around the corner.
It’s no secret that Jones nearly drafted Manziel in the 2014 NFL Draft. He has even admitted that he had Manziel’s name written down on the draft card ready to be turned in before he was talked down and convinced that they should select Zack Martin instead.
I think we can all agree that the Cowboys dodged a bullet there, considering how Martin has performed thus far in his NFL career and how Manziel has done just about everything in his power to force his way out of Cleveland.
Unfortunately for Manziel, it’s those shenanigans that have caused practically zero interest for his services from teams around the NFL.
That says something, considering Jerry Jones has publicly voiced his belief that Manziel has a fascinating skill set that should allow him to become successful at the NFL level. Once Cleveland finally decided to move on from him, many people believed that he was destined to become a Dallas Cowboy, but that hasn’t happened as of yet.
I truly believe that the best destination for Johnny Manziel to end up could possibly be the Dallas Cowboys and I’ll tell you why.
I know what you are probably thinking. Manziel in Dallas would be a complete disaster if you take into account his partying lifestyle and mix in the Dallas nightlife, but I think the Cowboys can provide a structure to help him get his life/career back on track.
In the past, the Cowboys have dealt with player’s off-field troubles by having them work with adviser David Wells. Wells has been assisting players since 1995 and has worked with several Cowboys players, such as Hall of Fame wide receiver Michael Irvin, guard Nate Newton, cornerback Adam “Pacman” Jones, defensive tackle Josh Brent, and wide receiver Dez Bryant.
Both Brent and Bryant even moved into Wells’ home in DeSoto, Texas while they were being mentored under his watchful eye.
Wells is known as a crisis management expert and takes a hands-on approach with the players, leading them in the right direction. He doesn’t have an official role with the Cowboys organization so he is usually hired on as a contractor.
Under Wells’ mentorship, Johnny Manziel could get his life headed in the right direction and repair a public image that has been damaged by his partying lifestyle.
The issues keeping Manziel out of the NFL at this point in his career have nothing to do with his talent; it’s the human element of his current lifestyle that is turning teams off. If he could possibly show the Cowboys that there is some semblance of turning his life around, Jerry Jones would sign him in a heartbeat.
No really knows what the future holds for Johnny Manziel, but you can rest assured that Jerry Jones will be keeping a close eye on the young man. That’s why I believe a union between the Dallas Cowboys and Manziel is inevitable.
