Cowboys cornerback Nolan Carroll will have the pre-trial hearing this Tuesday for his DWI arrest last May. Carroll was arrested in Dallas for driving on the wrong side of the road and other signs of intoxication during a field sobriety test.

The NFL has yet to make any judgment on Carroll’s status for the regular season. A first-time DUI or DWI offense typically comes with a two-game suspension, although the league can add to that if there are aggravating circumstances. Based on the police report, there’s nothing that clearly suggests a longer ban. However, the public endangerment aspect of driving on the wrong side of the road could prompt Roger Goodell to add a few more games.
Carroll signed with the Cowboys last March as a veteran replacement for the departures of Brandon Carr and Morris Claiborne in free agency. He is expected to have a big role in 2017, especially early in the season as the Cowboys’ cornerback depth chart is very inexperienced.
Of the five players assured to make the roster, only Carroll, Orlando Scandrick, and Anthony Brown have NFL experience. Even Brown only has one year so far as a pro. The other two are rookies; Chidobe Awuzie and Jourdan Lewis.
A suspension for Carroll is almost guaranteed, but perhaps it won’t come in Week One depending on how quickly the league office moves on it. The Cowboys would certainly prefer to have him early on as Awuzie and Lewis get more acclimated to NFL play.
So, based on the Zeke ruling and hard-on Goodell has to stick it to Jerruh, we can anticipate a 10-game suspension…right???
It’s hard to feel safe about anything with Goodell in charge, but I think Carroll’s case is pretty simple and he’ll get the standard two-game ban.
