Why Mark Sanchez Signing Will Likely Send Tony Romo To IR

If you thought today was just going to be you watching your favorite college football team with little to no noise from the world of the Dallas Cowboys… YOU WERE WRONG!

The Cowboys have trimmed their roster down to the league-mandated final 53. You can view all the cuts that they made right here, but it’s the addition that has everyone in a fuss.

This news broke while I was in the middle of Saturday’s OchoLive, and it was something we talked about at length together.

One major thing can be discerned from this signing in my opinion… The Dallas Cowboys are preparing to send Tony Romo to the Injured Reserve list with the designation to return.

What Does This Mean?

Should the Cowboys place Tony Romo on IR then after six weeks of being on it, he can be activated. Two weeks later, he can officially play. This would put Tony Romo on track to return Sunday, November 6th in Cleveland against the Browns.

How Does The Sanchez Signing Suggest This?

The Cowboys currently have 53 players on their roster, but they’ve also agreed to sign Mark Sanchez. Adding him to the 53 will require removing someone else. They’re not about to carry four quarterbacks (Romo, Prescott, Showers, and Sanchez) and they’re surely not going to cut Showers and leave themselves with only one quarterback (a rookie at that) who is familiar with their system.

The Sanchez signing says that they wanted a veteran presence in their quarterback room, and that they think that between Dak/Mark/Jameill they can survive the mandated eight weeks until Tony Romo can come back. At that point they’ll bring Romo back and likely let go of Showers to make room.

The Cowboys have been mum about Tony Romo potentially hitting the IR, likely so that their intentions to acquire a veteran quarterback like Sanchez weren’t exposed. Now that Sanchez is theirs, they can execute the full plan.

What Does Sanchez Signing Mean For Future?

The terms of Mark Sanchez’s deal have surfaced and also tell us a lot of information that we can use to predict the future.

The Cowboys have traditionally only liked carrying two quarterbacks on their roster. Honestly, every team wants to only carry two as three means you have to not carry someone else.

Considering the Cowboys only signed Sanchez for one year suggests that they likely believe Tony Romo will be back for 2017, and that he’ll be backed up by Dak Prescott only. If they had any legitimate doubt that Romo would retire after 2016 like some have suggested, they would have ensured that they had this veteran presence for Dak entering next season.
