There really have not been many moving parts at the Tight End position. Jason Witten is still himself, Gavin Escobar showed he could line up as a Wide Receiver during Training Camp, and James Hanna remains the best point of attack blocker. Hanna’s role in the run game is often diminished by fans, yet from last year’s film he was vital in helping capture the edge for a number of runs and is a core Special Teams Player.
All three of those previously mentioned are certain locks for the final 53, unless by the unlikely occurrence that they do move one of the Tight Ends via trade. Which leaves us with Geoff Swaim, who the Cowboys moved back into the 7th round this year to draft. This alone gave me the impression that if he showed any value that they were intent on keeping him around.
I will give Will McClay and his Scouts credit as he was sparingly used at the University of Texas during his tenure. Therefore, I believe the Scout that went to the Texas Pro Day was taken back by the skills he was able to flash. Swaim has the size and speed you look for in a productive pass catching Tight End.
But can he block?
Well, from what I have seen and reports on him it seems he is one that gets in the way. He is a slightly below average blocker right now, but it does seem as if he is willing to put in the work to improve. I trust that Dallas Cowboys Tight Ends Coach Mike Pope will definitely continue to work with him in that area.
Does he make the final 53?
I would honestly be surprised if he does not make this team, even if Hanna is back to complete health. Swaim will play Special Teams and is definitely a developing player at the position who may have a few wrinkles thrown in for him later in the season on offense. As with all the weapons on the field, it is easy to believe Swaim could go unaccounted for on Play Action. Just something to look out for.
He has flashed enough during Preseason to warrant a roster spot. He and Jameill Showers seem to have good chemistry, so that would be a connection to look out for during the game against the Texans.
