2016 Breakout Candidates: Lucky Whitehead

As we look ahead to a new season it’s always interesting to project players who could take a major step in their careers. Sometimes this is an obvious expectation, such as with Byron Jones becoming a full-time starter in his second season. Others, though, are not as obvious and may take a very specific set of circumstances to develop. With roughly two months to go before the start of training camp I thought I’d spend some time profiling Cowboys who could become major factors in the coming season. I’m going to start today with an emerging offensive weapon and potential special teams ace:

What is Dallas’ Biggest Post-Draft Question?

What is the Cowboys’ biggest question mark following the 2016 Draft? Well, what was the biggest question going into the draft? I think most would agree it was “Ezekiel Elliott or Jalen Ramsey” for the fourth-overall pick. We know Dallas went with the running back. Naturally, you wonder what that means for the secondary.

Dak Prescott & The Rarity of QB Investment in Dallas

Last Saturday the Cowboys spent a fourth-round pick on quarterback Dak Prescott from Mississippi State. You already knew that it was uncommon for Dallas to invest draft picks in the quarterback position, having only done it once (Stephen McGee, 2009) since Tony Romo became our starter in 2006. But do you realize just how far back that tradition goes, and just how rare it’s been for Dallas to draft a passer? In 1989, the Dallas Cowboys made Troy Aikman the first overall pick in the draft. It was the first pick of Jerry Jones’ ownership of the Cowboys.

Cowboys Post-Draft Position Strength Rankings

The offseason isn’t completely over. There are still some teams cutting veteran players after the draft and there should be several more after the important June 1st date. Trades can also happen as teams look to unload surplus talent at one position for future draft picks or to shore up areas of need. What needs could the Dallas Cowboys still address between now and the start of Training Camp in July? Taking their new rookie class into consideration, here’s a look at the strength of every roster position and where they may direct some attention.

Cowboys 2016 Roster Projection: Post-Draft Edition

I’ve been doing Cowboys roster projections for years now. It’s a great exercise in deductive reasoning but also provides periodic snapshots of where you see the team throughout the offseason and preseason processes. I like to get that first snapshot right after the draft. My next projection will come before training camp, reflecting all of the new information we’ve obtained from the May and June practices, any new free agent activity, and any losses of players due to injuries or suspensions. Keep in mind that I am projecting the Cowboys’ Week One roster.

Cowboys Wrap Up 2016 Draft w/ Four 6th-Rounders

The Cowboys sat out of the fifth and seventh rounds this year with no selections. However, they were a major presence in the sixth round with four draft picks. The first of those picks was cornerback Anthony Brown out of Perdue, whose selection was covered in more detail by our own Sean Martion. Here is a brief rundown of our final three picks from the 2016 Draft: #212 – Kavon Frazier, S, Central Michigan The easiest way to tell you about Frazier is to point to his NFL.

The Dallas Cowboys Select Dak Prescott at #135

The Cowboys have indeed come away from the draft with a quarterback, selecting Dak Prescott from Mississippi State with a late fourth-round pick. Prescott has been linked to the Cowboys for a while now with several offseason workouts and meetings along with time spent together at the Senior Bowl. He will compete with veteran Kellen Moore for the backup spot. Dallas admitted to trying to move up in the late first round to get Paxton Lynch and reportedly tried again today to acquire Connor Cook. Clearly, Dallas wanted to come away from this draft with a new face behind Tony Romo.
