News broke Sunday that former University of Alabama linebacker Rolando McClain is considering coming out of retirement to play again in the NFL.
The former Oakland Raider and Baltimore Raven was a first round pick in 2010 and seemed destined for stardom after posting 174 combined tackles, 5.5 sacks, an interception and a forced fumble in his first two years in the NFL.
Unfortunately, NFL life hit him like a heart attack and his new status contributed to a slue of arrests. In 2011, McClain was arrested for assault. McClain was arrested again in 2013 after giving a police officer a false name for a routine traffic citation. As if that wasn’t enough, McClain hit the “hat trick” with his third arrest in 2013 for disorderly conduct and resisting arrest.
McClain retired in 2013 acknowledging that he needed to get his life together. He re-enrolled at Alabama to complete his bachelor’s degree in family financial planning and seems to be ready once again for NFL stardom with a new head on his shoulders.
As a firm believer in second chances, I’m pulling for McClain. He’s got all the talent in the world and will be going back, should he decide to, to a fine organization in Baltimore that can surround him with all the help he could need.
