[tps_title]2017 NFL combine: 5 safety prospects to watch for the Dallas Cowboys[/tps_title]
[3/5] Desmond King, Iowa (5’11”, 206)
Despite having an outstanding career at Iowa as a cornerback, Desmond King probably projects better as a safety in the NFL. He is expected to run in the 4.5 range in the 40 yard dash, which isn’t ideal for a CB in the NFL.
A team may decide to draft him as a zone CB, but we will unlikely see him drafted by a team expecting him to play very much man coverage. He just doesn’t have the elite catch up speed for the NFL and quarterbacks at that level will definitely start taking advantage of that.
The Dallas Cowboys like versatility in their defensive backs and could use him as both a safety and a CB. It would really give their secondary not only another playmaker, but the versatility to disguise coverages and confuse the opposing quarterbacks. He has the instincts, competitiveness, and toughness to be a really good safety in the NFL and I think he would be a really good addition to the Dallas Cowboys secondary.
He’s not going to test off the charts at the NFL combine, but that could be good news for the Cowboys because he could still be on the board in the second round when they are on the clock.
“”I expect him (Obi) to perform really well in all of the different combine events, especially the broad jump and vertical jump.”
Man, you were prescient! He was the Combine’s best in both.
It’s
all about his game film. His athleticism really jumps out studying him.
