Defensive back Brandon Carr suffered a broken bone in his right hand on Saturday during training camp. While Carr will fly back to Dallas for surgery on Monday – three days before the Cowboys open the preseason- the injury is not expected to be serious.
According to coach Garrett, the injury occurred while Carr was playing press coverage.
Carr has not lived up to many fans’ expectations in his three years with the Cowboys, defending just 31 passes and recording six interceptions.
However, he has been an ironman in his career. Carr has never missed a game in his seven seasons with the Chiefs and Cowboys.
While keeping this streak alive may be difficult, the Cowboys can expect Carr back on the field very soon. Last season, DeMarco Murray suffered the same injury and underwent a similar surgery.
Murray’s surgery was also performed on a Monday, and he was on the field the following Sunday to help the Cowboys clinch the NFC East with a win over the Colts.
With an improved front seven, expectations are high for the Cowboys secondary this season.
First round draft pick Byron Jones will likely see more snaps at corner in Carr’s absence. He has been worked at corner as well as at safety so far in camp. Tyler Patmon will also continue to get his chance to prove himself and establish a role on this defense.
The entire secondary will be tested on Thursday in San Diego against one of the league’s best QBs, Phillip Rivers.
