The Dallas Cowboys might be in the market of adding depth to the cornerback position now that Morris Claiborne has suffered what is believed to be a sports hernia injury.
If this is true, Claiborne would likely end up on injured reserve, which would really be unfortunate after the way he has been playing this season.
We all know the saying “when one door closes another opens”, well that might be the scenario that plays out if the Cowboys decide to add the Tampa Bay Buccaneers former second round draft pick, Jonathan Banks.
Banks was the 43rd overall draft pick by the Buccaneers in the 2013 NFL Draft, but was released yesterday after falling out of favor with the new coaching regime in Tampa Bay.
Banks is 6’2″, 185 and was considered to be one of the best CBs in the 2013 draft after winning the Jim Thorpe Award, which by the way is given to the top defensive back in college football. He was also first-team All-SEC and first-team All-American in 2012 at Mississippi State.
Banks initially started his college career as a safety, but made the switch to cornerback his sophomore season. So, he does seem to possess some versatility, and we all know how the Dallas Cowboys love that in their players.
He is still Mississippi State’s all-time leader in interceptions with 16, which is pretty impressive when you think about it. He also had four quarterback sacks and four defensive touchdowns in college.
In his NFL career with the Buccaneers he has accumulated 130 total tackles, 16 pass deflections, seven interceptions, and one defensive touchdown.
His best season in the NFL was in 2014 in Lovie Smith’s Tampa 2 defensive scheme, when he registered 50 tackles and four interceptions. So, he could already be pretty familiar with Rod Marinelli’s defensive scheme.
Now, I don’t know what the decision-makers are thinking for the Dallas Cowboys, but this move just makes too much sense not to happen if Morris Claiborne is expected to miss an extended amount of time.
The Dallas Cowboys have already had success with a former Mississippi State Bulldog, Dak Prescott, so why not roll the dice twice and see what happens.

Chrisp, I personally would have given up a seventh round draft pick to add Jonathan Banks for CB depth. I was really surprised the Cowboys didn’t make any moves.
