Dallas vs Houston: 6 Players To Watch Not Named Lucky

Three down, one to go. To some, tonight’s game might seem a bit dull with the likes of Dez Bryant and Tony Romo watching from the sidelines. For the most part, the starters and primary backup spots are set for most teams. But, there are still roster spots to be filled, and tonight’s game is the last chance for the players fighting for a spot to so show the Cowboys front office and coaching staff that they belong.

Here are 6 players to watch when the Texans come calling:

Keith Smith has appeared to be better prepared this year compared to last. He has always had the physical talent, and so far this preseason he appears to be prepared mentally. He has shown the ability to read the play and position himself to make the tackle. I could be wrong but barring a disastrous performance against the Texans, I believe he’ll make the 53 man roster.

Dustin Vaughan has been, well, terrible so far this year. The Cowboys had enough belief in Vaughan last year to keep him on the 53 man roster and not risk him to a waiver claim. Vaughan has had multiple opportunities this preseason and has looked indecisive, inaccurate, and to be honest, completely lost at times. Vaughan will see plenty of snaps against the Texans, this is his last chance to show why the Cowboys shouldn’t cancel the Vaughan experiment.

There was a point during this preseason that I thought Damien Wilson was going to be the starting SAM linebacker. Wilson, without a doubt, has the ability to run and tackle that’s the problem. Wilson plays with a reckless abandon and at times runs himself completely out of the play. I want to see if he plays this game with more control and if he climbs his way up the depth chart.

Ben Gardner and Lavar Edwards may or may not be fighting for the same roster spot with the upcoming suspension of Greg Hardy. But, if they are, Edwards has been the most consistent of the two. Gardner has made plays, but Edwards has shown up more on tape and has the upper hand going into the game against the Texans.

Davon Coleman was on and off and back on the Cowboys roster last year. The reason for this was his head. Coleman has all the ability in the world, but he had a problem last year with applying himself on each and every play. Since his altercation early on in camp (when Hardy questioned his work ethic) that has not been the case. Coleman has been making plays and if they continue he could very well find himself in front of Terrell McClain on the depth chart.

Make sure to check back throughout the week, for all the latest Cowboys roster moves.
