Jason Witten means many things to the Dallas Cowboys organization. Preparing to enter his 14th season with the team, the ever-reliable tight end has been through his fair share of losing seasons while also getting his opportunities in the playoffs – although still chasing his first championship ring.
Should that elusive Super Bowl win not come for Jason as a player for the Cowboys, ESPN thinks that he could have a career trying to coach Dallas towards the promise land.

As you see here, Jason Witten was selected as the current Cowboy that is most likely to one day coach his team, as ESPN picked an active player on all 32 teams. If Witten does one day trade in his cleats for a headset and coach the Dallas Cowboys, he would become just the third former professional player to lead the team as their Head Coach.
Current Head Coach Jason Garrett is one of them, and embodies some of the quiet leadership aspects that you would expect to see from Coach Jason Witten. The other is Tom Landry, the undisputed greatest coach in the team’s history.
If Garrett ever leads the Dallas Cowboys to multiple Super Bowl titles, it becomes an interesting hypothetical to think about how you would rank Jason with Landry and a coach version of Jason Witten.
While Cowboys Nation would love to see Witten patrolling the Dallas sideline someday, his production on the field is still a valuable factor in this team’s success. With the offense looking set for big things in 2016 with Tony Romo, Dez Bryant, Jason Witten, and rookie Ezekiel Elliott, we will soon find out if a well-deserved Super Bowl ring is in the cards for Witten and Co.
The other two veterans listed there, Romo and Bryant, would also make good candidates for head coaching positions, but neither of them has performed at the smoothly consistent level that Jason Witten has year after year.
For fans of America’s Team everywhere, seeing more of Jason Witten on Sundays for as long as we can – either as a player or a coach – is a welcome site when it comes to a team icon.
