About halfway through my position-by-position fantasy breakdown for the Cowboys, I figured it would be a good time for a mock draft.
My goal in this mock draft was to get a feel for which Cowboys will be drafted, and where. I ended up with a trifecta of Cowboys in Terrance Williams, Dan Bailey, and Tony Romo.
Here is how it all went down…
Round 5 – Pick 46: WR Terrance Williams
Terrance Williams was my first Cowboy drafted, and second wide receiver. The 5th to 6th round seems to be a likely landing spot for Williams.
Taking him in the 5th should be a sure-fire way to lock up the third-year WR, while waiting to the 6th is a bit riskier.
The WR position is always by far the deepest in the draft, so don’t panic over waiting too long and losing out on Williams.
Round 7 – Pick 66: QB Tony Romo
Romo has made plenty of appearances on my fantasy teams in the past years. However, this may be the latest I’ve seen the signal caller taken.
Romo consistently puts up big fantasy numbersĀ and waiting on him to the 7th round helped me stack other positions such as running back- where I landed LeSean McCoy and DeMarco Murray.
Round 10 – Pick 95: K Dan Bailey
Dan Bailey has been automatic in his four years with the Cowboys, converting just shy of 90% of his kicks.
Many fantasy owners tend to scramble for a kicker when they see others being drafted. The run on kickers began in round 9 of this draft, but waiting on Bailey until round 10 allowed me to draft Cam Newton as a backup QB.
Running Backs
Perhaps the biggest question for the Cowboys from a fantasy perspective this year comes from the running back position.
It is unclear who will lead the way in carries, or if it will be more of an even split between Joseph Randle and Darren McFadden – which I predicted earlier.
This mock draft saw Joseph Randle picked at #59 overall. That makes him a 6th round pick, which seems a bit high.
I would stay away from Randle until at least the seventh, and look to snag him in the eighth as a steal.
The end of round eight saw Darren McFadden drafted at #79 overall. This is a fair spot for the injury prone back, who’s role with the team may be clearer post training camp.
I will have more on the running back situation as we get into training camp, including an updated mock draft!
Other Cowboys Draft Notes:
- Dez Bryant was the first WR drafted, at #9 overall. The first eight picks were all running backs.
- Jason Witten and Gavin Escobar both went undrafted, which was not a huge surprise. The Cowboys defense was also not taken.
