Giants’ Secondary Takes Big Hit in Preseason Opener

The Giants’ secondary has been a weak spot for a normally solid defensive unit in the past seasons. Last season, they were the third highest team in passing plays allowed that exceeded 20 yards.

Overall they allowed 240 yards per game, good for a middle-of-the-road 15th in the league.

With Jason Pierre-Paul absent and the front seven not nearly in its top form, the secondary was exposed – and ultimately banged up – as the team opened the preseason with a loss to the Bengals on Friday.

Already playing without former first-round pick Prince Amukamara, the Giants lost this year’s fifth round pick Mykkele Thompson to an Achilles tear in the second quarter. He will miss the 2015 season.

Their other safety, the coveted second-round pick Landon Collins, was also injured in the first half. The rookie injured his MCL and had X-rays performed on his knee.

Live look at Giants’ defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo after being reminded they play the Cowboys in week 1.

While he may not miss regular season action, the lack of practice time for the Giants’ first-team defense should be alarming for returning defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo.

He will have to work his magic to have this team ready for Dez Bryant and Co. in week 1.
