Just by suiting up today, Jason Witten will break yet another record for the Dallas Cowboys franchise. He will have played more career games for the Cowboys than any player in team history, passing Ed “Too Tall” Jones.
Today will be Witten’s 225th game since being drafted by the Cowboys in 2003. Ed Jones played in 224 games for Dallas from 1974-1989. If not for the two years that Jones stepped away from football to be a professional boxer, the record would likely be much higher.
Witten has opportunities today to move up in the NFL record books today. With seven more catches he will move into fourth place on the all-time receptions list, passing receivers Cris Carter (1,101 catches) and Marvin Harrison (1,102). He only needs 53 receiving yards to hit 12,000 career yards, making him only the second tight end in NFL history (the other is Tony Gonzalez) to hit that total.
Last week, Jason Witten passed Michael Irvin as the Cowboys all-time leader in receiving yards. If Bob Lilly didn’t already own the title of “Mr. Cowboy,” it would be hard not to give it to Jason. He has certainly been the team’s standard-bearer for well over a decade.
I keep thinking Witten is winding down, but good as ever this year. Most frustrating game today since the playoff loss in Green Bay.
