A Mystery WR Making Noise Around The NFL: Moritz Boehringer

Brian Martin

It’s rare in today’s NFL that a draft prospect is virtually unknown and even rarer that nobody can really find out anything about that particular prospect.

A wide receiver out of Germany has made quite a ruckus around the NFL recently and left scouts and general managers scrambling to find out anything they can about this player.

Fortunately for them, they were able to witness 6’4″, 227 pound Moritz Boehringer put on a show at his pro day on Thursday in front of a variety NFL scouts. Hopefully, he was able to justify a little bit of the hype that surrounded him.

Although it was officially Florida Atlantic’s pro day, it was Boehringer that stole the show.

40 yard dash: 4.43
Vertical Jump: 39″
Broad Jump: 10’11”
Bench Press: 17 reps
3 Cone Drill: 6.65
20 Yard Shuffle: 4.10
60 Yard Shuffle: 11.15

His Pro Day numbers would have landed him in the top five in the wide receiver group at the NFL Combine.

Even Matt Miller is intrigued and scrambling like the rest of the NFL scouts trying to find more information. This was his reply when asked about the German wideout.

A wide receiver that has that kind of size and speed is a rarity and the fact that it came from a draft prospect that is from outside the United States makes it that much more interesting. Some team in the NFL will give this guy a chance, so why not the Dallas Cowboys.

The production from the Cowboys wide receivers in 2015 was ho-hum and it’s no secret that the team has already worked out several receivers hoping to upgrade the position

Dez Bryant missed time due to a foot injury and was never quite healthy when he was inserted back into the lineup. He ended up having to have foot surgery in the off-season, but fortunately he should be a full go once practices kickoff.

Without Bryant the Cowboys learned the hard way that the position desperately needs to be upgraded and I fully expect them to do just that at some point in the 2016 NFL Draft.

Enter Moritz Boehringer. He has the prototypical size and speed that NFL teams covet in their wide receivers, but having played football in Germany he will be extremely raw and considered a developmental prospect.

Do the Cowboys want to take on a developmental prospect?

Well, if you remember last year the Cowboys added another overseas player, defensive end Efe Obada. Obada is no longer on the Cowboys roster, but it does prove that the team is willing to take a chance on the unknown and hope to develop them.

Also, don’t forget that the Cowboys already have a player on the roster that grew up playing football in Germany, so why not add another one. Linebacker Mark Nzeocha is a native born German (Ansbach Germany) and you can bet he’s on board about adding Boehringer.

Has the recruiting already commenced?

I’m not saying that the Cowboys should be the favorites to land Boehringer or anything like that. I’m just saying that they should definitely do their homework and see if he is an option because as his Pro Day numbers would suggest, there is something there to work with.

It is a difficult task for any team in the NFL to properly evaluate Boehringer because not only has he only played three years of football, but getting any kind of information on him will be difficult to obtain.

Without a proper evaluation, it will be nearly impossible to project where he might be drafted or if he will be drafted at all. Of course, that is one reason why this is one story that will be interesting to keep track of leading up to the draft.

Do you think the Dallas Cowboys should take a shot at a developmental wide receiver prospect like Moritz Boehringer?

That’s a video of what kind of developmental wide receiver prospect the Dallas Cowboys could possibly be getting if they decided to go that route.
