One of my harder evaluations in this 2017 NFL Draft thus far is Washington safety Budda Baker. The Cowboys would likely have to target Baker with their first round pick, and plenty in Cowboys Nation (myself included) have been expecting the board to lean CB with this pick anyway.
Budda Baker is capable of playing some as a Nickel CB, but projects as another versatile piece for Rod Marinelli to use all over the back end of his defense in 2017 and beyond. Byron Jones is a safety to build around for the Cowboys, and any combination of free agents Barry Church, JJ Wilcox, or Kavon Frazier and Jeff Heath should have Dallas feeling comfortable with their depth at the position.
Baker’s instincts and ability to play down in the box might make him the ideal rookie, long-term answer next to Jones in this 2017 draft though – a player that would find a way to improve this defense the second he steps onto the field with the Cowboys.
Zay Jones will be a Day-2 pick in the draft. I won’t make it out of the 3rd round.
Thank you for reading, Kevin. I’m happy to be wrong about Jones, seeing a lot of analysts really like him, but I just don’t see a player set up to succeed in the NFL. Caught everything at ECU though, tough pro evaluation.
Small school players are always the hardest to gauge. Out of all the positions on the field though, it seems WR succeeds the most from the small schools. If the skills are there, they seem to thrive. Other positions are littered with failed experiments. Still, no guarantee either way, but with certain teams always in love with small school prospects, I can’t see Jones make it to day 3.
