Stephen Tulloch Released; Could Dallas Come Calling For LB?

RJ Ochoa

It was 5 days ago when the Dallas Cowboys found out that their #55, Rolando McClain, would be suspended for the first ten games of the 2016 NFL season.

Today, July 5th, the Detroit Lions released their own #55 – Stephen Tulloch.

With so many 5s going on, it makes sense for you to give me a high-five, right? Wait till the end. I want to earn it!

The Lions informed Tulloch that he was not a part of their 2016 agenda all the way back in February. It’s simply taken him passing a physical, which he did on Tuesday, to make it a formality.

February is the month when the Super Bowl is played, and Dallas Cowboys fans want their team to be in it come 2017. Thanks to Rolando McClain’s suspension, in order to get to one the question should be asked… Is Stephen Tulloch someone the Dallas Cowboys should look at?

The linebacker situation in Dallas is a special kind of mess. For crying out loud, saying JJ Wilcox should move to that position makes sense. Tulloch, who led the Lions in tackles during the 2015 season with 107, would be the swiffer we need to clean this thing up.

Here are the facts regarding Stephen Tulloch:

  • He is 31.
  • He tore his ACL in 2014.
  • He returned in 2015 and did indeed lead the Lions in tackles.
  • At this stage of his career he’s more of a two-down player.

A popular name thrown out to join the Cowboys, thanks to the recent hype surrounding Amazon’s All or Nothing, is Dwight Freeney. While Freeney is more of a household name, the signing of Tulloch would accomplish the same purpose – establishing some much needed depth.

A lot of people are upset with Rolando McClain and his antics and simply want him cut out of principle. That might not necessarily be the best idea.

What is a good idea is bringing in a veteran for Matt Eberflus to play with. It’s a drum that we here at Inside The Star have been pounding since the moment the McClain news hit.

Adding Stephen Tulloch to our list of three will only up the number to four, but it’s five that we’re talking about today. #55. Let’s replace ours with one that we can count in in Stephen Tulloch, or hey… let’s at least try.

Now give me that high-five.
