The Dallas Cowboys have yet to trail in a game this season after defeating the Denver Broncos last night at Texas Stadium.
After a scoreless first quarter, cornerback Larry Brown gave the Cowboys their first scoring chance by intercepting Broncos quarterback John Elway at Denver’s 20-yard line, returning it 18 yards to the Denver 6-yard line. Two plays later, Troy Aikman found Daryl “Moose” Johnston for the 5-yard touchdown.
They would score again on their next drive, going 93 yards on 10 plays, capped off by Aikman’s first rushing touchdown of the season.
Denver responded with a touchdown on their next drive, aided by Terrell Davis rushing for 42 yards. Shannon Sharpe reeled in an Elway pass for 12 yards over the middle to put Denver on the board.
The 7-point deficit was as close as Denver would get, as Aikman found tight end Jay Novacek at the end of a 77-yard drive for a touchdown to make it 21-7 Dallas. Aikman threw for 196 yards on the day, with two touchdowns and one interception, adding 19 yards and 1 touchdown on the ground.
Denver’s biggest play of the game came on the following drive when Elway found Anthony Miller for a 59-yard touchdown.
Dallas scored 10 points on their next two drives, a 1-yard touchdown for Smith, part of his 114-yard day, and a 45-yard field goal from Chris Boniol to make it 31-14 with four minutes to go. The Broncos would score once more when Hugh Millen found Miller for the touchdown in the waning seconds of the game.
While Michael Irvin didn’t find the endzone, he caught six passes for 94 yards. Novacek tallied 56 yards and a touchdown on 5 receptions.
The Cowboys moved to 2-0 on the year while the Broncos fell to 1-1. The Cowboys will travel to Minnesota next week to take on the Vikings, who are 1-1 after defeating the Detroit Lions 20-10 yesterday.
A want became a need last week when Dallas lost starting cornerback Kevin Smith to a torn Achilles. Dallas signed premier cornerback Deion Sanders on Saturday to a 7-year, $35 million deal. Sanders will be sidelined for a period of time due to arthroscopic surgery before making his Cowboys debut.
