Cowboys Linebacker Conundrum: Who’s In, and Who’s Out?

The Cowboys made the switch to the base 4-3 defense after their 2012 campaign produced a mild 8-8 record. Since the change in 2013, the team has only carried 6-7 linebackers on their opening day roster. As it stands right now, the team has 11 linebackers on the roster. That number may vary slightly as we near training camp, but because our base defense requires three stand up linebackers, I can’t imagine it to drop much before cuts to 75. This presents a relatively interesting situation to our personnel department as they’re going to have to figure out who makes the cut.

Marinelli on Randy Gregory: “I’m Training Him Like It’s His Opening Season”

Among the coaching staff for the Dallas Cowboys, Defensive Coordinator Rod Marinelli stands out as a guy with a big personality. He demands a lot from his players and is not shy about letting them – and the media – know when his expectations are not being met. He’ll also be the first to praise a guy that is performing well in his system on the defensive side of the ball, while continuously searching for ways to improve that player. When asked about suspended second-year defensive end Randy Gregory on Wednesday, Marinelli had this to say: “I’m training him like it’s his opening season.

Tony Romo Gets New Set Of Logos From ESPN

My Dad has the same initials as I do. He also happens to be a huge golfer. Like any veteran of the links he knows that he has to mark his ball. Since he’s almost as creative as his son he’s developed a cool little logo. He writes an “R” and circles it to signify the “O” for our last name.

Re-Dez-ulous: Dez Bryant Ranks 51st In NFL Top 100

If there were a gold medal given out to the person who has made the worst decision in the history of the universe concerning Dez Bryant then Dean Blandino would own it. The 2016 iteration of the NFL Top 100 takes home the silver, though. The annual list where players play prisoners of the moment dropped its first Dallas Cowboy on Wednesday when players #60 through #51 were revealed. Inside The Star loyalists will remember my predictions concerning the Dallas Cowboys I thought would make it and the final player on Wednesday’s episode was indeed Mr. Throw Up The X.

Let’s start at the top. Jerry and Avon are similar in a ton of ways. First off, they are both straight gangsters in their own right. Jerry bought the team and then immediately fired the only coach the Cowboys had ever known in Tom Landry. Landry is a legend and a personal hero of mine, but you have to admit that takes balls.

NFC East Rookie Watch: New York Giants

The path to the Super Bowl starts by clinching the NFC East. That means beating the New York Giants, the Washington Redskins and the Philadelphia Eagles. Fortunately, with the help of the draft, the Dallas Cowboys have improved as a team. Unfortunately, so has the rest of the NFC East. Ezekiel Elliott And Cowboys OL Make Deadly Combination

Stating that the Dallas Cowboys have the best offensive line in the entire NFL may sound a bit redundant, but I honestly believe that they will look even more dominant in 2016 now that they have a running back that truly fits the zone blocking scheme. The Cowboys gave their offensive line an early Christmas present when they decided to draft Ezekiel Elliott #4 overall in this years draft. They could have chosen to go with a dominant defensive player with that selection, but they chose to add a player that can  make the strongest position on the team (OL) even stronger. If you add all of that up, it equals a deadly combination. Right?

Recent NFC East History Helps Cowboys

Historical patterns don’t always hold water. We just watched the Golden State Warriors become only the 10th team in NBA history to come back from a 3-1 series deficit. Special teams rise above the circumstances. Right now nobody in the NFC East looks all that special. Maybe we’ll change tune in retrospect, but it appears that all four teams have a chance to be competitive.

Would You Play Ezekiel Elliott … Where?

The other day I turned on some of Ezekiel Elliott’s college tape just for fun. I was at work thinking about just how talented he was, and got the itch to watch him wreck. Play after play, it’s amazing to me how well he does everything. When he runs, he runs with purpose and direction. He makes guys miss in the open field, can lower his shoulder and bulldoze his way to a first down, or can bounce an outside run to the sideline, gain the edge, and explode down the field.

DT Maliek Collins Breaks Foot in OTAs

Rookie defensive tackle Maliek Collins has broken his right foot during Organized Team Activities and could miss up to 3 months. Collins, taken in the third round of last April’s draft, was expected to be an immediate contributor on the defensive line. He was considered an instant scheme fit and could have even been a Week One starter if Tyrone Crawford is asked to play defensive end. Now he will likely miss all of training camp and perhaps the entire preseason. Collins’ absence will give veterans Terrell McClain, Jack Crawford, and David Irving better opportunity to cement a role in the defensive line rotation.
