There’s no question which group has the betterĀ backup QB. To be able to put a guy like Tony Romo into the game is a luxury that no other NFL team can claim. Romo’s cameo appearance in Week 17, with a touchdown cherry on top, only gives us more confidence.

The real issue here comes down to Tony Romo in 2014 versus Dak Prescott now. As good as Prescott has been this year, 2014 was the peak of Romo’s career. His passer rating, TD/INT ratio, and completion percentage were never higher. He had all of his physical tools and nine years of experience working together.

Saying that Prescott has been “good for a rookie” no longer does him justice. He has been good, even great, by most QB standards. But the biggest concern right now is if Dak can trade punches with guys like Aaron Rodgers, Matt Ryan, or Tom Brady in an offensive shootout. That would not have been a question with Romo in 2014.

So yes, the 2014 Cowboys were better at quarterback. But this season has been Dak Prescott’s story, and he deserves the chance to see it through.
