Fantasy Football: Preseason Running Back Rankings – Week 3

John Williams

The Running Back position is constantly changing in Fantasy Football. On top one minute and out of favor the next (looking at you C.J. Anderson). There have already been some interesting changes since last week’s rankings.

The Risers

Dallas Cowboys fans don’t want to read this, but Christine Michael is on the rise. Thomas Rawls is still recovering, which has left an opening for Michael to earn a role in the Seattle Seahawks running game.

Head Coach Pete Carroll is now talking about the Seattle backfield in the form of a committee. Michael has always had the athletic ability, but had never put it together with the mental side of the game. After being cut by 3 different teams (Seattle, Dallas, Washington) in 2015, Michael has apparently had an awakening. Seahawks coaches have been raving about his work ethic.

A couple of weeks ago, Jeremy Langford was rumored as the starter, but only the lead back in a full-blown committee in Chicago. Since, he has received all of the first team work in the preseason and asserted himself as chair of the committee.

Fallers

New England Patriots running back, Dion Lewis, has been a popular name in both standard and PPR leagues. He started 2015 on fire before suffering a season ending ACL tear. New reports released yesterday have it that Lewis will now require a second surgery.

How much time he will miss is still unknown.

NFC East

Oof, Matt Jones. The Washington Redskins running back was already in a precarious place with his role. Rumors had it that Washington was going to employ a committee approach in its backfield with Keith Washington and Chris Thompson getting more looks. Now with a sprain to his AC joint (ligament in the shoulder), it’s expected that Jones will miss time.

The New York Giants backfield is beginning to take shape. Rashad Jennings is going to get a full compliment of touches as the early down back. Shane Vereen is reprising his role as the passing down back. Andre Williams and rookie Paul Perkins are fighting for the backup early down role.

In Philadelphia, Ryan Mathews continues to be the starter. If you need a running back, I guess he is a starting one, but with the Eagles’ offensive line issues, I’d much rather have Darren Sproles. Expect the Eagles to throw it a lot because their running game isn’t great.
