[tps_title]2017 NFL Combine: 5 RB participants to watch for the Dallas Cowboys[/tps_title]
[4/5] James Connor, Pittsburgh (6’2″, 240)
Why he’s on this list: James Connor is one of the bigger running backs in the entire 2017 draft class. This is a player you will find yourself rooting for, especially after learning that he beat cancer in 2015. I’m sure that will be discussed at length during the NFL combine coverage.
In his return to the field in 2016 after beating cancer, he rushed for over 1,000 yards and scored 20 touchdowns. He fits the right kind of guy (RKG) criteria that head coach Jason Garrett prefers in his players, both on and off the field.
Connor is a well-balanced player that is difficult to bring down due to his physical running style and size. He can grind out the tough yards, but isn’t likely going to break a lot of big runs because of his lack of top-end speed. On film, he shows that he is a capable receiver out of the backfield and is more than willing to stand in to do the dirty work in pass protection.
What to watch for at the NFL combine: I think nearly everybody will be paying close attention to what James Connor’s time is in the 40 yard dash. His lack of speed is probably the biggest concern for NFL scouts, especially when trying to determine what his effectiveness will be like in the NFL. I will also be watching him during the agility drills. I think this will be an event where some of his flaws become apparent, especially for a RB his size.
