Byron Jones – 2 years remaining on a 4-year, $8.6 million deal (5th year option)
Jeff Heath – 3 years remaining on a 4-year, $7.61 million deal
Kavon Frazier – 3 years remaining on a 4–year, $2.44 million deal
Barry Church – Unrestricted free agent
J. J. Wilcox – Unrestricted free agent
Evaluation: Barry Church and J.J. Wilcox are both going to be testing the free agency waters, but if the Dallas Cowboys were wise, they would try to re-sign one of them. Of course, it all depends on the type of contract they are seeking.
Byron Jones just completed his first year as a full-time safety, and I think we can all agree that he had a really good season. Of course, everybody wants to see him get more takeaways, but I can’t tell you how much he helps the Cowboys on defense with his versatility.
Jeff Heath finished the season strong and looked really good against the Green Bay Packers in the Divisional Round of the playoffs. He may get a good long look at becoming the starter next to Byron Jones next season.
Kavon Frazier is a little bit of an unknown because he didn’t receive much playing time on defense. He was mostly a special teams player in 2016. He will have an opportunity to become a starter next season, but he will have to continue developing as a player.
Depending on what the Cowboys decided to do with Church and Wilcox, this could be a position that needs to be addressed at some point this off-season.
