QB Tony Romo

Trade Tony Romo

The opening of the 2017 free agency could start off with a bang for the Dallas Cowboys if they are able to find a trade partner for their longtime QB, Tony Romo.

With the emergence of Dak Prescott last season in 2016, this is no longer Romo’s team. He knows it, the team knows it, and the rest of the NFL knows it. It’s a tough way to end your career with the only team you’ve played for in the NFL, but Romo still has a desire to play, which could be of interest to a number of teams around the league.

Personally, I’m not a fan of the Cowboys just releasing Romo and letting him pick which team he chooses to sign with. I think they should absolutely try to find some way to receive some kind of compensation, even if it’s just a mid-round draft pick.

An outright release saves the Cowboys $5.1 million against the salary-cap, the same they would save if he was traded. Of course, there is the option of designating him as a post-June release, which would save the Cowboys $10 million, but that money wouldn’t be able to be utilized until June.

For me, the best solution is to find a trade partner in order to get some compensation in return. This is a deep draft class and the more draft picks the Cowboys can accumulate, the more talent they can hopefully add to the roster. I’m a big fan of accumulating more draft picks, especially since they didn’t receive any compensatory picks.

  1. It’s gonna be kinda hard to trade Romo , what team in their right mind would trade anything for a old fragile qb. Release him and get it over with already !!! It’s not like he’s going to any threats in the NFC We can use that money for Defense. Speaking of Defense that should be the ONLY focus of the off-season , resign back who you can and Draft heavy on the defensive side of the ball BUT if a playmaker TE or WR is available high in the draft you take him but other than that the off season should be simple but effective Don’t waste a good team because you won’t put together the necessary pieces on defense I feel like its the same story going into EVERY off-season DEFENSE WINS CHAMPIONSHIPS Not tryna out score everybody and playing keep away
